Message from the Director

Education plays a crucial role in determining a nation’s capacity and economic competitiveness. It also shapes the values and beliefs of the next generation. To achieve the Brunei Vision 2035 for an educated, highly skilled and accomplished people, it is crucial that educators are equipped with the necessary professional competency and aptitude apart from the need to provide access to quality education facilities. The professional capacity of teachers is also amongst the central focus that is stressed by the nation’s top leadership.

Under the Ministry of Education’s seven Grand Initiatives, teachers’ professional development became an important strategic focus area. With the Grand Initiative of ‘Teacher Quality and Professionalism’, the Ministry strives to enhance teachers’ competency standard. The setting up of an academy was therefore intended to propel the professional capacity of our teachers which led to the establishment of The Brunei Darussalam Teacher Academy (BDTA) in 2013.

The main purpose of the academy is to contribute to the development of teacher competency standard to strengthen their teaching and learning process. BDTA also serves to provide an avenue for the professional network of educators in relation to teaching and learning. The academy is also intended to encourage continuous professional development programmes in teaching and learning for teachers in schools.

The activities of BDTA will include annual events in the form of forums, workshops or conferences, regular professional development programmes for teachers, building a repository for key resources and details on upcoming events through BDTA website.

As Brunei progresses towards its Vision 2035, education continues to play a critical role in nation building. This importance can never be understated, as rightly emphasized by the Minister of Education, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, during the official launching ceremony of International Forum and Workshop on Teaching and Learning on 25th July 2011.

The thematic concepts of BDTA can be summed up as to Lead, Engage, Aspire and Develop (LEAD), with a tagline: By Teachers, For Teachers, For The Children.

There the functions and responsibilities of the Academy can be summarized as follows:

  1. To contribute to the development of teacher competency standard to strengthen their teaching and learning processes.
  2. To provide an avenue for the professional network of educators in relation to teaching and learning.
  3. To strengthen partnership with stakeholders and collaborators on teaching and learning quality.

BDTA will continue to strive in supporting and enhancing the professional development of our teachers.
